Steve Farrow has decided that the best way to say goodbye to Winter is to enjoy it to the utmost! Be sure to bring your snowshoes and be ready to trek in the snow. We will meet at the Holland Pond Fishing Access at 10:00 am and walk to the trail head (partly plowed, partly not.) We will then make our way through the Bill Sladky Wildlife Refuge to Round Pond.....where we will check out the new lean-to! Bring some hot chocolate and snacks, be prepared for the weather,
Let Steve know you plan to come by emailing him at ssf01290@ccv.vsc.edu
Verna Stoddard is leading a snowshoe hike. Meeting at the Community National Bank in Island Pond, leaving for trailhead at 9am. Parking is limited at trailhead so we will carpool if possible. Snowshoes required, also bring water, snacks, and warm layers. Also recommend spikes and water proof clothing in case of ice and/or rain. This is a 4 mile loop hike with 328 feet of elevation gain. The hike will be flexible for length and duration, this could be decided by the group the day of based on comfort level.
Dogs are welcome.
Also Verna is considering bringing a stove to make hot chocolate or prepare some in advance in a big thermos to share. RSVP gmcnek@gmail.com
Join us in East Burke, VT for an early Spring activity at Dashney Nordic Center at 9AM, where you can choose to ski or snowshoe. After, if you choose (around 11AM), purchase lunch at Cafe Lotti (pre-order suggested), and attend our annual Spring Meeting (at noon), where we will be electing members to our executive committee. Nominations are being accepted for Director, President, Secretary, and Treasurer at gmcnek@gmail.com. We will be reviewing our winter and upcoming Spring events. We will make car pool arrangements before the day. Mark your calendar!
The trail closure on Monadnock Mountain remains in effect. There's still a "NO TRESPASSING" sign on the gate at the gravel pit, although it is easily overlooked when the gate is open. The continued presence of an old trailhead parking sign at this location only adds to the confusion over its status, but a person working at the gravel pit confirmed to me that this trail is still closed.
As some of you may be aware, there is an alternative route that avoids the gravel pit, but I wouldn't recommend using it at this time. It follows a private right of way that encroaches on a nearby dwelling. While this property isn't posted, its owner has expressed no interest in encouraging public access to their land. Please respect this choice and find another mountain to hike for now. Thank you!
