Hike Leaders Needed!

We are in desperate need of volunteer hike leaders. The only GMC requirement to lead a hike is that you are an active member. If you are new to leading hikes we ask that you are familiar with the hike you are leading. Please consider leading us on your favorite hike.

Contact Outings Coordinator Susan Winsor for more information.

    Perry Holbrook Snowshoe - NEK

    December 2, 2023  10:30 am - 1:30 pm

    Let's start off our winter adventures with a snowshoe trek in the Perry Holbrook State Park. Approximately 2.1 miles, this trail passes by two ponds and then ascends to a look out on Big Rock Hill before proceeding to the summit at 2254'. The snowshoe to the summit is challenging, but the trail, all in all is moderate. There will be an option to go to the third pond once making the loop past the summit.

    PARKING IS LIMITED: We will let those who respond know where carpooling will be. Contact Susan at s.j.p.winsor@gmail.com to participate.

  • KHT Partners Hike

    KHT Partners Hike

    December 8, 2023  9:00 am - 3:30 pm
    Meet behind the Railroad Building- 23 U.S. Route, 105 E Brighton Rd, Island Pond, VT 05846; https://maps.app.goo.gl/BiVdoZxYjnxxpStX7

    Hi Folks,

    Please save the date- Friday, December 8- for the annual Kingdom Heritage Trail Partners Hike.

    This annual ‘meeting’ is a required element of the Kingdom Heritage Trail Hiking Corridor Plan and an opportunity for project partners to check in, reflect, plan, and share. The day will include introductions and updates, as well as a moderate hike to see portions of the KHT on the ground (exact location tbd). As in past years, this is a great opportunity for project partners to gather and share information in an informal atmosphere.

    More details to follow but tentative discussion items include:

    * 2023 season updates
    * Trail adopters
    * Future trail work
    * Designated campsites
    * Vehicular access to Sweet Tree lands
    * Gore mountain trail bridge
    * CRAG Black Mountain update
    * Upcoming corridor plan update- 2025

    More details to follow, including meeting time/location (typically Island Pond). A copy of the KHT map can viewed here: KHT map_2-sided_apr2019.pdf (vermont.gov)

    Please share this invitation with people in your network and feel free to share additional topics that you would like to include in the visit. This is admittedly a large invite group, but we want to capture the many partners who are, have been, or will be involved in this project. Please let me know if you can/not attend and/or if another representative from your organization should be included.

    Feel free to reach out with any questions, updates, or to confirm your participation.

    Best,

    Luke

  • Kettle Pond Hike - NEK Section

    Kettle Pond Hike - NEK Section

    December 10, 2023  10:00 am - 12:00 pm

    Groton State Forest is beautiful any time of year! Join Andrea Kane and Paul Trojano as they lead you on the three-mile loop around Kettle Pond. Meet at the Trail head on Route 232 at 10:00 with your micro spikes or equivalent and snowshoes to be safe, plus bag lunch to eat at the cold, snow-covered picnic table! This hike is relatively easy but has numerous boulders and roots to navigate around so can be considered moderate.

    Questions can be directed to Andrea at dreakane@hotmail.com or by calling 802-592-3061.

Monadnock Trailhead Closed

Please be advised:

The trail closure on Monadnock Mountain remains in effect. There's still a "NO TRESPASSING" sign on the gate at the gravel pit, although it is easily overlooked when the gate is open. The continued presence of an old trailhead parking sign at this location only adds to the confusion over its status, but a person working at the gravel pit confirmed to me that this trail is still closed.

KHL Poster

As some of you may be aware, there is an alternative route that avoids the gravel pit, but I wouldn't recommend using it at this time. It follows a private right of way that encroaches on a nearby dwelling. While this property isn't posted, its owner has expressed no interest in encouraging public access to their land. Please respect this choice and find another mountain to hike for now. Thank you!
