Maidstone Lake and Covered Bridge Hikes
Eighteen people walked three miles to Maidstone Lake on April
6th as part of a program to explore the Champion Lands. Snowshoes
were not needed as we followed the road to the boat ramp.
The river was running heavily; we detoured to see the churning
rapids. Lunch was on a long boulder train leading into the
lake. Lyndonville's three covered bridges along back roads
were explored by hikers on April 13th. History was connected
with each bridge. A tour of Shores 19th century museum by
Jim Fearon was included.
Highlights of the April 13th meeting
Beth Dugger announced that Mark Aboutjaily, a recreation major
at Lyndon State College, is interested in establishing a subsection
of the NEK at the college. The Lyndon State College students
will participate in the Bald Mountain step replacement work
trip on June 1.
Ben Rose, executive director of the Green Mountain Club reported
that the NEK is the 14th section of the club. It has, in its
brief existence become the fastest growing section under the
direction of its founder, Beth Dugger. He also mentioned that
the Green Mountain Club's annual meeting on June 8th would
be at the Bromley Mountain Ski Resort. Another item is the
publication and availability of a hiker's guide by the middle
of May. The volume's reference to the Champion Lands will
be a short summary.
Pat Aubin, on behalf of the section, thanked Beth for all
of the work she has done for the Northeast Kingdom Section
of the Green Mountain Club.
