Yarmouth, Maine-based mapping firm DeLorme has agreed to donate
GPS hardware and DVD topographic mapping software to the Northeast
Kingdom Section of the Green Mountain Club, following a recent
meeting between Section President Chris Bechard and DeLorme
public relations and marketing staff.
DeLorme, a leading publisher of maps, atlases, mapping software
and online mapping applications donated a portable global
positioning system (GPS) receiver as well as their most recent
release of a digital 3-D topographic mapping software application
based on USGS topographic quad maps and satellite imagery.
The two products used together not only allow real-time GPS
tracking and plotting via a handheld or laptop computer, but
also allow custom topographic maps with various overlays to
be stored, displayed and distributed digitally and in print,
both in 2-D and 3-D formats.
Bechard approached DeLorme in an effort to utilize GPS and
digital mapping for the section's proposed trails building
and maintenance projects in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom. “This
is a win-win situation for our section,” stated Chris,
who works as an information systems technician when not enjoying
the trails. “Not only will we have the capability to
accurately map and plot our outdoor projects, but DeLorme
has also asked us to submit photos of our members using their
products for possible use in their web and print advertising.
This will give our new section much needed exposure and will
help build our membership."
In May of this year, the U.S. government removed selective
availability restrictions on civilian global positioning equipment,
allowing the private user to pinpoint their location worldwide
to within five meters.
