Hikers Look for
“Local” View (9/00)

LYNDONVILLE - A brand new Northeast Kingdom section was accepted into membership by the Green Mountain Club on Saturday.

Some two dozen hikers who live in the Northeast Kingdom or have hiked there in the past gathered this summer to start the process of forming a local club.

"We wanted to help make sure that local voices get heard in planning hiking opportunities on the Champion Lands and in the rest of the Northeast Kingdom,” explained section president Chris Bechard of Lyndonville.

Bechard, who has hiked in Asia and Africa as well as throughout the United States, said the Green Mountain Club goals fit in with local needs. The local section adapted the main club by-laws to better fit the region.

The club purposes include making the mountains of Vermont play a larger role in the lives of people living here, and taking care of trails and shelters.
